Went out for about an hour and a half this afternoon to try to get a couple of female Common Ringlets (Coenonympha tullia) for eggs. Went up north of Brampton and wandered down a bike/walking path that was created when the tracks were removed from an old abandoned railway. Full sun, lots of heat and not terribly humid. Lots of stuff flying, especially skippers which were darting about everywhere. Saw at least 10 Pipevine Swallowtail Butts, 1 Eastern Tiger Swallowtail – of course I did not touch these – that would be illegal! I also saw but was unable to net a Great Spangled Fratillery and 2 Silver Spotted Skippers. Man, I was swinging like a drunk this afternoon!! I did get one perfect White Admiral – no sign that it was a transition species – full White markings.
After catching what seem to be about 300 male Ringlets, I finally got 2 females. They are safe and sound in a nice little tupperware container with a little grass where they will hopefully lay some eggs.
Here is where I was:

Here is the list from this afternoon.
1 White Admiral (Limenitis arthemis)
6 Little Wood Satyr (Megisto cymela)
2 Common Ringlets (Coenonympha tullia)
4 Northern Crescents (Phyciodes selenis) Again – this is my ID – this species is hard to distinquish from P. tharos.
3 Silvery Blues (Glaucopsyche lygdamus)
4 Hobomok Skippers (Poanes hobomok)
1 European Skipper (Thymelicus lineola)
1 Arctic Skipper (Carterocephalus palaemon)
1 False Crocus Geometer (Xanthotype urticaria) – Flushed several of these up out of the grass.
All the Butt’s went to Norbert Kondla. The Geometer went to Howard Grisham.
