Got to my mother-in-laws in Smith’s Falls, Ontario quite late tonight. After 11:00pm. Set up the lights quick, but did not hold out much hope as the temps were quite cool. Ended up pulling in a couple of moths in about the 45 mins I was out before heading to bed.

See post 083107 Night for a map of where I was.

List for this evening:

1 Drepana bilineata (Two-Lined Hooktip)

1 Pero honestaria (Honest Pero)

These will go to Howard Grisham.

Daytime collecting at the quarry north of Milton, Ontario.

4 C. ladon – Norbert

1 N. antiopa – Norbert

2 Psychomorpha epimenis – went to Howard Grisham

Went collecting at my old favorite in the Milton area near the Dufferin Aggregates quarry. The one that is slowing wiping out my favorite collecting area. Not much flying today as it is still a bit cool and overcast.  See this post for a map of my collecting area.  The lat. and long. are N43.33.1959 W-79.58.5500.

For Today:

2 Celastrina ladon (Spring Azure) – one of them is a blend between lucia and ladon (dark patches on underside)

1 Nymphalis vaualbum j-album (Compton Tortoiseshell)

These went to Norbert Kondla

Went out collecting after work today. First swings of the season! Drove up north of Brampton, Ontario into the area of Terra Cotta. Did not see much other than Morning Cloaks flying. I drove slowly and when I saw a cloak from the road, I stopped and watched it patrol for a couple of mins to figure out its flight path. Then got into the best position for a swing (you only get one swing with these) and waited.

Ended up netting two – out of about 15 tries.

The following went to Norbert Kondla.

2 Morning Cloaks (Nymphalis antiopa)

  • one at 43.42.474, -79.57.400
  • the other one at 43.42.776, -79.58.009

Did some lighting tonight to see what later season stuff might be flying. However, it was very cool this evening, so not much was flying. I set up sheets just beyond my mother-in-laws house.

List of stuff from tonight.

2 Large Tolype (Tolype velleda)

1 Isabella Tiger Moth (Pyrrharctia isabella)

1 Maple Spanworm (Ennomos magnaria)

1 Fringe Tree Sallow (Adita chionanthi)

These all went to Howard Grisham.

After a long collecting layoff – I finally found some time to do a bit of collecting at my mother-in-laws again. I’ve been so busy this summer with other projects like buying a new boat/home. See weliveonaboat.com for more on that. Anyway – nice day here – warm but not hot. Full sun. I don’t normally grab so many Clouded Sulphur, but these were so fresh and so abundant that I just had to swing at them. Of course, catching them on the fly can be a challenge – I swung at a whole lot more than what I caught. Note the small size C. tullia – not used to seeing them that small. Also note the mostly missing small eyespots on the lower underside wings. There is a lot of variation in these.

List from Today

1 Common Wood Nymph (Cercyonis pegala)

13 Clouded Sulphur (Colias philodice)

5 Common Ringlet (Coenonympha tullia)

These all went to Norbert Kondla

After work today, I stopped off by the old Lakeview Power Generating Station for some late afternoon collecting. Arrived around 4:40 and finished by 5:40. The habitat was rolling grasslands area under a powerline cut. Kind of nice to find a private area to collect in, right in the city. This afternoon was full sun and quite warm. I managed to collect another female Common Ringlet to try to get eggs from again – I killed the two I had collected previously by not changing the grass cuttings in the box.

List from today.

1 Eastern Tailed Blue (Everes comyntas)
1 European Skipper (Thymelicus lineola)

1 Common Ringlet (Coenonympha tullia)

2 Cabbage Whites (Pieris rapae)

9 Silvery Blues (Glaucopsyche lygdamus)

1 Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta)

These all went to Norbert Kondla collection.

Went out for about an hour and a half this afternoon to try to get a couple of female Common Ringlets (Coenonympha tullia) for eggs. Went up north of Brampton and wandered down a bike/walking path that was created when the tracks were removed from an old abandoned railway. Full sun, lots of heat and not terribly humid. Lots of stuff flying, especially skippers which were darting about everywhere. Saw at least 10 Pipevine Swallowtail Butts, 1 Eastern Tiger Swallowtail – of course I did not touch these – that would be illegal! I also saw but was unable to net a Great Spangled Fratillery and 2 Silver Spotted Skippers. Man, I was swinging like a drunk this afternoon!! I did get one perfect White Admiral – no sign that it was a transition species – full White markings.

After catching what seem to be about 300 male Ringlets, I finally got 2 females. They are safe and sound in a nice little tupperware container with a little grass where they will hopefully lay some eggs.

Here is where I was:

1 White Admiral (Limenitis arthemis)

6 Little Wood Satyr (Megisto cymela)

2 Common Ringlets (Coenonympha tullia)

4 Northern Crescents (Phyciodes selenis) Again – this is my ID – this species is hard to distinquish from P. tharos.

3 Silvery Blues (Glaucopsyche lygdamus)

4 Hobomok Skippers (Poanes hobomok)

1 European Skipper (Thymelicus lineola)

1 Arctic Skipper (Carterocephalus palaemon)

1 False Crocus Geometer (Xanthotype urticaria) – Flushed several of these up out of the grass.

All the Butt’s went to Norbert Kondla. The Geometer went to Howard Grisham.

More collecting at the mother-in-laws. See 060807Night for location details. Cooler tonight, so not as much is flying.
